SOUTH BEND, IND. The No. 14 University of South Florida men's soccer team fell to No. 8 Notre Dame 5-0 in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament hosted by the University of Notre Dame.
"Notre Dame did a good job," said USF head coach, George Kiefer. "I think you can learn a lot more from a lost than a win. I think we can learn a lot from this game. It may turn out as a positive thing for us, even though it may not fell like it now, but I truly feel like it will be. Overall, I think it was a good weekend for us. We battled hard against Indiana and ended up tying them."
In the first half, moments after sophomore Diego Restrepo deflected a ball that was shot by the Irish, junior Jorge Mora had a wide open shot but was called offsides before he could capitalize on the open net.
After a foul by the Bulls in front of the 18', the Irish shot the ball over the wall but was saved by Restrepo. The Irish scored their first goal after a mishap by the defense. Justin Morrow kicked the ball from 13 feet out into the corner of the net.
Within 27 minutes, Bright Dike headed a ball off a corner kick by Jeb Brovsky, who placed the ball in the goal to get it by Restrepo making the score 2-0.
After another corner kick, a deflected ball was placed into the back of net, putting the Bulls down 3-0 in the first half.
USF countered just before halftime, when junior Zak Boggs got the only shot, but hit it off the crossbar to keep the Bulls shutout in the first half.
With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Irish headed another ball into the back of the net, putting the Bulls down by four.
In the second half, the Bulls came out more aggressive, but not before Boggs received a yellow card and followed by Kevon Neaves receiving a red card, having the Bulls play a man down in the second half.
With 13 minutes left in the game, the Irish pulled away even more when they put in another shot in goal going ahead 5-0.
Senior Jason Devenish fired a shot from the 18' line but it sailed high, unable to put one on the board for USF.
The Bulls were outshot 22-3 in the game and fall to 1-1-1 on the season.
The Bulls will return to the USF Soccer Stadium on Saturday, September 13 at 7:30 p.m. where USF will face the Panthers of Florida International.
